No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
