Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
